Switch Gear Change Out and new Cooling Equipment for Food Processing Plant

Project Summary

Power Electrics was engaged to support a customer whose temporary power requirements had been incorrectly specified by a previous provider. By working closely with the customer and their electrical contractor, we delivered a resilient, scalable power solution that ensured reliable operation, accommodated high start-up loads and provided built-in redundancy. The project strengthened an already positive working relationship and has led to ongoing and future opportunities.

The Challenge

The customer had originally been advised to install a single 1 × 1250 kVA generator. However, this specification proved insufficient for the site’s operational demands. The proposed solution did not allow for high start-up currents from heavy equipment, such as chillers, and offered no redundancy in the event of equipment failure or routine servicing. This left the project with no margin for error and a significant risk of downtime.

The Solution

Following a detailed assessment of the site’s load profile, we identified the need for a more flexible and resilient approach. Rather than relying on a single generator, we proposed four 500 kVA generators operating in synchronisation. This configuration provided the necessary capacity to accommodate heavy start-up loads while also introducing built-in redundancy, ensuring continuity of power if one unit was unavailable. Throughout the project, our team worked closely with the customer to ensure the installation ran smoothly and met all operational requirements.

The Results

The final solution delivered a robust and dependable temporary power setup, capable of supporting high inrush currents without interruption. The customer was extremely satisfied with both the technical solution and the level of support provided, praising the collaborative approach taken by the Power Electrics team. This has led to continued discussions around future projects and an ongoing partnership with the customer’s electrical contractor, including a long-term generator hire supporting new laser-cutting equipment.
