Field Service Engineer

Job Title: Field Service Engineer

Reports To: Utility Services Manager

Hours: Full-Time (40 hours)

Location: London – Thames Valley

Job Purpose

This is an exciting opportunity to work with the largest generator specialist in the South West. You will support the Service Department in the service and maintenance of Customers Generators.  You will need a strong customer focus, as you will be liaising with both external customers and departments within Power Electrics. 

Key Tasks & Main Duties

  1. Carry out planned service and maintenance work on customer generators

  2. Service, Fault find and carry out breakdown repairs to customers equipment

  3. Carry out site surveys requests as required

  4. Carry out duties on our company on call rota system currently 1 week in 10

  5. Comply with the Company Health & Safety Policy, including carrying out general housekeeping to ensure work areas are tidy. This includes company vehicles.
  6. Comply with all aspects of the company ISO 9001:2015 quality management standards, ISO 14001: 2015 environmental management standards and occupational health and safety management best practice, proactively contributing to the company’s continuous improvement programme.

Skills & Experience Required

Possess a relevant qualification in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering/Diesel Fitting/ Plant e.g. City & Guilds, BTEC or equivalent

OR to have served/completed an approved apprenticeship in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering

OR proven experience servicing and repairing generator sets predominantly FG Wilson, Cummins  etc, particularly in:               

  • Identification of mechanical problems with computerized diagnostic equipment
  • Performing repairs and services on all makes and models of generator sets
  • Identifying the problem and cause of failure through logical troubleshooting steps
  • Determining corrective action through inspection of failed parts.
  • Applying proper engine technical skills in inspection, disassembly, failure analysis
  • Assembly, diagnosis, and engine systems operating performance tests.
  • Troubleshooting equipment and servicing generator components including:

alternators, wiring harnesses safety devices, shutdown switches, control systems

  • Switching gear and battery systems :
  • Inspections, repairs, services and start-up load bank test requirements on equipment
  • Testing of systems and parts for potential malfunctions
  • Understanding of Low Voltage up to > 110v
  • Understanding of Medium Voltage 110v > 1000v
  • Understanding of High Voltage > 1000v
  • Understanding of single phase and three phase wiring
  • Disassembly and reassembly of system components
  • Utilization of the proper testing equipment for effective repair and maintenance

You will also need:

  • Full Driving Licence ESSENTIAL (with towing categories preferred)
  • Strong communication skills and good customer awareness with the ability to respond to customers’ requirements effectively and efficiently
  • Previous experience of working in a Field Service environment advantageous
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Holder of ECS/CSCS Card preferred
