Generator Relocation for Health Board

A Health Board commissioned Power Electrics to support the relocation of a critical generator from a data centre to a new facility within Aneurin Bevan Hospital in Ebbw Vale. The generator, a key component in the client’s emergency power strategy, needed to be transferred without disrupting ongoing hospital operations. Given the scale and complexity of the task, our electrical and cable installation teams worked seamlessly to deliver a safe, efficient relocation.

The Challenge

The project involved transporting an FG Wilson P230 generator weighing approximately 6 tonnes. The generator was located within a former data centre that posed significant access challenges due to surrounding structures and limited crane positioning options. The client required a precise lift and secure transfer without damaging equipment or interfering with active systems at either site.

The Solution:

Comprehensive planning and site assessments were conducted ahead of the move. Power Electrics arranged for a 200-ton crane to be brought on-site and positioned on the opposite side of the building from where the generator was located. This required meticulous coordination and lifting simulations to ensure a safe, stable hoist over the structure.

Once lifted, the generator was carefully lowered onto Power Electrics’ custom transport and securely relocated to the new facility within the Aneurin Bevan Hospital. The generator was offloaded and safely positioned at the destination site, ready for final commissioning during the next project phase scheduled for 2026–27.
