Reliable Backup Power Supply for Property Management Company
A specialist property management company required a resilient backup power supply solution to overcome constant power supply breaks, which were causing valuable working hours to be lost for the tenants in the property.
The Challenge:
The site entrance was located on a red route in the centre of Reading, which presented a significant logistical delivery challenge. Obtaining permission for a road closure would have caused a minimum 8-week delay, which would have led to a loss of revenue for the customer. The generators were to be located in an underground car park with a height restriction, making it difficult to get larger generators onto the site.
Power Electrics needed to design, install and maintain a solution capable of delivering reliable backup power to the site. They also needed to ensure the generators fitted comfortably on site and were ready to react whenever required.
The Solution:
Following various site assessments and meetings with the customer, Power Electrics came up with a solution to deliver 5x 100kVA synched generators in a load-sharing configuration. This provided a number of benefits over using one 500kVA generator. The smaller 100kVA generators could be delivered and installed in the underground carpark, where there were strict height restrictions. This also eliminated the need for an expensive road closure. Our engineers installed and tested the generators to ensure they ran in sync with the power supply and provided reliable backup power when needed.
The generators were needed to support a non-reliable mains supply where the power was fluctuating. The generators react to the ebbs and flows in the power required, so when the entire 500 kVA is needed, they spring into action, while when power demand drops, only some of the generators need to run.
The use of multiple generators ensures improved fuel efficiency. It works out more cost-effective, with a lower fuel consumption by running generators only as needed, leading to lower operating costs than running a single large generator. Generators also run most efficiently at 75% load; with multiple smaller generators, the load can be balanced between the sets to ensure they run as efficiently as possible.
Additionally, Power Electrics factored in reliability being integral to this project. As the backup power supply provider, it was crucial to the mission that the power supply was ready to kick in when needed. By utilising multiple generators, if one drops, the remaining generators can continue supplying power, preventing a complete power outage and ensuring continuous power.

Power Electrics successfully delivered a tailored backup power solution for the property management company, overcoming significant logistical challenges while ensuring a dependable and efficient power supply. By deploying five synchronised 100kVA generators in a load-sharing configuration, Power Electrics removed the need for costly road closures, optimised fuel efficiency and enhanced the stability of the system. This fresh thinking met the site's backup power demands and provided a cost-effective and scalable solution that safeguarded business continuity for the property's tenants.
