Unique BES-Powered Construction Ceremony

Celebrating the first day of a major project is a tradition many industries hold, especially the construction sector. Groundbreaking events are great for generating public and media awareness and for bringing together the stakeholders of a project, helping foster relationships that ensure the smooth running of the project.

Our customer, Vistry Group (formerly Countryside Properties), contacted us to help them power their groundbreaking ceremony at a construction site near London.

The Challenge:

The one-day event was held inside a marquee tent on the site’s grounds. The main challenge was to provide a reliable temporary power source that would not disturb the celebrations inside the thin-walled temporary structure, thus requiring a silent power solution.

An additional difficulty was the site's layout and getting an HGV in position to offload the power source and additional equipment.

The Solution:

Our sales team worked with the customer and devised a plan to utilise a 45kVA/90kWh Battery Energy Storage (BES) unit with a distribution board and cabling instead of a conventional diesel generator. This allowed us to provide only one unit onsite that met the no-noise requirement.

This solution supplied a power source that could handle the event's linear power load. Usually, a BES unit would be paired with a generator, but as the event was only one day, the use of a generator in conjunction with the BES unit was also not required.

The account manager, Carl White, helped deliver and install the BES unit to the site a day in advance and successfully supplied the event with silent power.  This unconventional solution of a single BES unit, instead of pairing it with a generator, saved the customer money on fuel and cut noise and emissions by 100% onsite.

We wouldn’t usually deliver a BES unit to the site without a generator, as it would inevitably run out of stored energy – but in this scenario, it was the perfect solution for a silent, zero-emission solution!
