3.5MVA for Renewable Water Source Heat Pump Facility
Power Electrics was contacted when one of the largest renewable water source heat pump facilities in Europe needed temporary power until its new high voltage (HV) mains supply was installed.
The Challenge
The distribution network operator (DNO), who oversees the power lines and infrastructure of the heat pump facility were being delayed by land ownership issues. This in turn affected the route of the new HV supply to the facility. This meant Power Electrics were tasked, working alongside the equipment supplier, in providing the loads required to keep the facility fully functioning.
This involved comprehending any fluctuation in loads, requiring different forms of equipment during the build and commissioning process. There was also the problem of tight access into the facility and the adverse ground conditions.
The Solution
Working alongside the equipment supplier the facility required a substantial 2800kW, equivalent to 3500MVA, load. A plan was developed where multiple 500kVA generators would be used, instead of larger sets, due to very tight site access, difficult ground conditions and fluctuating load requirements. Power Electrics provided fuel management throughout the project along with 7 x 500 kVA synched generators, 7 x 3000 Litre fuel tanks, 5000 Amp common bus isolator and over 1500m of cabling.
As a result, the water source heat pump facility was able to continue operating while it awaited a permanent HV power supply.
